In June 1858, an extraordinary heatwave struck London, causing centuries of untreated sewage floating in the River Thames to ferment. The resulting stench, known as the Great Stink, brought public life to a grinding halt. Unluckily for British politicians, the newly built Palace of Westminster sat right on the riverbank.
As the temperature rose, the stench inside the House of Commons became so unbearable that MPs fled the chambers with handkerchiefs pressed to their faces. To combat the toxic vapor, Parliament's leadership ordered an aggressive chemical defense: heavy sheets soaked in chloride of lime were hung over every window facing the Thames. At first, the makeshift chemical barrier provided mild relief, but the sheer scale of the river's pollution quickly exhausted London's disinfectant stockpiles.
Within days, regional chemical suppliers couldn't keep up with the government's voracious demand for lime and carbolic acid. Government workers desperately poured nearly 250 tons of lime directly into river outlets, but it was like trying to put out a forest fire with a squirt gun. As the lime supply collapsed and the soaked curtains dried into crusty, foul-smelling rags, Parliament reached a breaking point.
Lawmakers realized that chemical masking was useless against a decaying river system. In an unprecedented burst of panic-driven efficiency, Parliament passed a legislative bill in just eighteen days to fully fund Joseph Bazalgette's revolutionary subterranean sewer network, permanently altering civil engineering history.
