In March 1888, the Great White Hurricane caught New York City completely off guard. As temperatures plummeted and winds surged over 45 miles per hour, snow drifted as high as second-story windows. At the time, the city relied heavily on steam-powered elevated railways, known as the 'Els,' to move hundreds of thousands of daily commuters.
These coal-chugging steam locomotives were normally reliable, but the storm exposed a critical flaw in their logistical design: they needed a continuous, localized supply of coal and water to maintain steam pressure. As tracks iced over, locomotives burned through their coal at double the normal rate just trying to forge through massive drifts. Meanwhile, trackside coal depots were buried under tons of snow, and the horse-drawn carts responsible for replenishing trackside coal supply bins were totally immobilized.
Within hours, steam engines across Manhattan ran completely out of fuel and died mid-transit. Passengers found themselves trapped inside unheated, wooden railway cars dangling dozens of feet above freezing streets. With no fuel to run the onboard stoves, temperatures inside the carriages plummeted.
Enterprising locals with long ladders soon arrived below, charging desperate commuters exorbitant fees—up to five dollars, equivalent to over a hundred dollars today—just to climb down into the snowbanks. The terrifying multi-day paralysis of the elevated coal-transport network proved to city planners that elevated, weather-exposed steam travel was a disaster waiting to happen, directly sparking the movement to build an underground subway network.
