During the Spanish-American War in 1898, thousands of eager American volunteers rushed to Camp George H. Thomas at the historic Chickamauga Battlefield in Georgia, expecting military glory. Instead, they encountered one of the most embarrassing health disasters in U.
S. military history. Over 60,000 troops crammed into a staging ground meant for a fraction of that number, creating a rapid breakdown of basic sanitation.
Camp commanders hastily ordered thousands of latrines, then called sinks, to be dug without topographic surveying or site mapping. As heavy rains soaked the Georgia red clay, these unmapped latrines began to overflow. Without official maps tracking local hydrology, recruits unwittingly dug open-air trenches directly uphill from freshwater springs and shallow wells.
Worse still, hastily laid surface water lines ran parallel to or directly through contaminated drainage routes. Contaminated runoff seeped into cracked freshwater pipes and subterranean aquifers, turning the camp's primary drinking supply into a toxic soup. Swarming flies carried pathogens to mess halls, but the unmapped cross-contamination between waste runoff and fresh water was the true engine of the catastrophe.
Out of the roughly 21,000 typhoid cases in the entire U. S. Army during the war, Camp Thomas alone suffered thousands of infections and hundreds of deaths, vasting outpacing battle casualties in Cuba.
The disaster sparked an official investigation by the Reed-Vaughan-Shakespeare Board, which revealed that total ignorance of environmental geography and absent latrine maps had poisoned an entire army. The tragedy fundamentally restructured U. S.
Army field hygiene, proving that poor mapmaking and misplaced waste can be far deadlier than enemy artillery.
