On June 30, 1908, an estimated 12-megaton explosion detonated over the Podkamennaya Tunguska River in remote Siberia, flattening 2,000 square kilometers of forest. Despite seismic stations across Europe recording the shockwave, a full scientific expedition did not reach ground zero until 1927—nineteen years later. The primary bottleneck was intense political turmoil in Imperial Russia.
In 1908, the Tsarist government was struggling with revolutionary unrest following the 1905 Revolution, prioritizing political survival over scientific inquiry into rumors from indigenous Evenki nomads. Russia soon plunged into World War I in 1914, followed immediately by the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution and the bloody Russian Civil War. Funding and rail transport for non-military science completely evaporated.
It was not until Russian mineralogist Leonid Kulik convinced the newly established Soviet Academy of Sciences that the impact site might contain valuable meteoritic iron for Soviet industry that funds were allocated. Kulik finally endured a grueling trek via the Trans-Siberian Railway, sledges, and pack horses in 1927, discovering millions of scorched, felled trees radiating outward.
