On January 15, 1919, a colossal steel tank holding 2. 3 million gallons of fermenting molasses ruptured in Boston, sending a deadly 35 mph wave of thick syrup through the streets. While it sounds like a surreal joke, 21 people died and hundreds were injured.
Modern engineering forensics reveals that the disaster was not an act of anarchists as the company claimed, but a catastrophic failure of basic metallurgy and structural design. Built in 1915 under the supervision of Arthur Jell, an executive who skipped basic hydrostatic safety testing to save time, the tank was a disaster waiting to happen.
