The Deadly Flaw Behind the 1919 Great Molasses Flood

On a warm January day in 1919, a two-story wave of sticky molasses destroyed Boston's North End, killing 21 people. The culprit was not a random act of nature, but a catastrophic failure of industrial engineering and reckless negligence.

In 1915, the Industrial Alcohol Company rushed the construction of a massive steel tank in Boston to store 2. 3 million gallons of molasses. Intended to be converted into industrial alcohol for World War I munitions, the tank was built with thin, brittle steel plates and undersized rivets.
