On the foggy evening of September 8, 1923, Destroyer Squadron 11 of the United States Navy was executing a high-speed tactical exercise along the California coast. Comprising fourteen Clemson-class destroyers under the command of Captain Edward H. Watson, the fleet surged southward toward San Diego at 20 knots.
As darkness fell, visibility dropped to near zero in dense fog, forcing navigators to rely entirely on dead reckoning—calculating position based on elapsed time, compass heading, and estimated speed. Unbeknownst to the crews, unusual ocean currents created by the massive Great Kanto Earthquake in Japan a week earlier had imperceptibly altered the ships' drift. Furthermore, navigational calculations failed to account for complex tidal surges near the Santa Barbara Channel.
Believing the fleet had already cleared the hazards of the northern coastline, Captain Watson ordered a 90-degree turn east toward what he assumed was the open channel entrance. When new radio direction finder bearings suggested the ships were actually much further north than calculated, commanders dismissed the wireless readings as faulty equipment. In reality, the squadron was heading straight toward the razor-sharp reefs of Honda Point near Lompoc, California.
At 21:05, the flagship USS Delphy sliced into the rocks at full speed, sounding her emergency siren. Following in tight formation, six subsequent destroyers slammed into the jagged reefs or crashed into each other before they could alter course.
