At two minutes before noon on September 1, 1923, the Great Kantō Earthquake struck the Kantō plain in Japan. The magnitude 7. 9 earthquake hit precisely as millions of residents were lighting charcoal stoves for lunch.
The seismic shaking collapsed tens of thousands of wooden structures, trapping residents and immediately igniting hundreds of simultaneous blazes across Tokyo and Yokohama. High winds from a nearby typhoon swept across the devastated urban landscape, fanning the scattered fires into intense, consolidated firestorms. As vast swathes of the city burned, intense superheated air rose rapidly into the sky, creating immense low-pressure zones near ground level.
Cool air rushed in from all directions to replace the rising plume, triggering extreme atmospheric instability and powerful wind shear. These fluid dynamics generated monstrous atmospheric vortices known as fire whirls or fire tornadoes. The most catastrophic vortex occurred at the open grounds of the former Rikugun Honshi Atato in Tokyo, where over 40,000 displaced citizens had sought refuge.
A tornado-scale fire vortex hundreds of meters wide swept across the site, filled with hurricane-force winds and burning debris.
