With traditional communications wiped out overnight, major Japanese newspapers like the Mainichi Shimbun and Asahi Shimbun deployed their emergency backup network: thousands of homing pigeons. These avian couriers were meant to carry micro-written dispatches from ruined disaster zones back to regional news bureaus in Osaka and beyond.
However, what sounded like a foolproof emergency protocol quickly morphed into a chaotic logistical bottleneck.
