On November 28, 1942, Boston's Cocoanut Grove nightclub was packed with over 1,000 revelers—more than double its official capacity. When a flash fire ignited flammable tropical decorations, panic erupted. The crowd naturally surged toward the main entrance they had used to enter the venue.
Tragically, this primary exit was equipped with a single revolving door. As hundreds of terrified patrons pushed against the door's glass panels, the intense pressure crushed people into the door compartments, jamming the mechanism entirely and creating an insurmountable wall of trapped bodies. To make matters worse, alternative exit options failed catastrophically due to lethal architectural flaws.
Several emergency exit doors were designed to swing inward instead of outward. As the surging crowd pressed frantically against these doors, the sheer force of human bodies made it physically impossible to pull the doors inward to open them. Other secondary exits had been intentionally locked or welded shut by management to prevent patrons from leaving without paying their tabs.
In total, 492 people died in the span of just fifteen minutes, making it the deadliest nightclub fire in American history. The sheer scale of the tragedy forced a revolution in architectural safety standards. It resulted in mandatory building codes requiring panic hardware, regulations dictating that all public exit doors must swing outward in the direction of egress, and strict rules requiring standard side-hinged outward doors to flank any revolving door installation.
