How One Little Relay Blew Out the Lights for 30 Million People

On November 9, 1965, a tiny electrical component in Ontario misread a completely normal power flow, plunging over 30 million people across North America into pitch-black chaos.

On a chilly Tuesday evening in November 1965, millions of people across the northeastern United States and Ontario were settling into their evening routines. At 5:16 PM, everything went dark. Subways halted mid-track, skyscrapers turned into silent monoliths, and over 30 million people found themselves suddenly off the grid.

The culprit behind one of the largest power outages in history was not a massive storm, a malicious attack, or a mechanical meltdown. It was a single misconfigured protective relay located at the Sir Adam Beck Hydroelectric Power Station No. 2 in Queenston, Ontario.

A protective relay acts like a safety circuit breaker, designed to disconnect a transmission line if current exceeds safe operational limits. Years earlier, in 1956, engineers had set a specific relay at the station to trip at 375 megawatts. Fast forward to November 1965: cold weather drove up electricity demand as people turned on heaters and lights.

The power flowing through transmission line Q29BD reached 375 megawatts—a level well within the physical capacity of the line itself, but high enough to trigger the overly cautious setting on the relay. When the relay tripped, line Q29BD suddenly disconnected. The electricity instantly rerouted onto four adjacent transmission lines, instantly overloading them.

In rapid sequence, their relays tripped as well. With nowhere left to go within Ontario, millions of kilowatts of surge current surged south into the New York power grid. This massive overload forced generators across the American Northeast to automatically shut down to protect themselves from damage, triggering a catastrophic cascading failure.

Within minutes, New York City, Boston, and parts of eight U. S. states were completely dark.

The incident ultimately led to the creation of modern grid reliability standards, proving that a single bad setting on a small switch can turn off civilization.
