Blasting a Beached Whale: The Physics and Fallout of Florence's 1970 Blunder

When a 45-foot sperm whale washed ashore in Oregon in 1970, officials used half a ton of dynamite to dispose of it. The resulting blast shattered car windows and rained decaying blubber across a half-mile radius.

In November 1970, a dead 45-foot sperm whale weighing roughly 8 tons stranded itself on a beach near Florence, Oregon. Responsible for clearing the carcass, the Oregon State Highway Division faced an unusual engineering predicament. Burning or burying the whale was deemed impractical due to its immense size and shifting sands.

Highway engineer George Thornton decided that half a ton (twenty cases) of dynamite would obliterate the carcass, pushing smaller pieces out to sea where scavengers like seagulls could finish the job. However, the fluid dynamics and anatomical structure of cetaceans were severely underestimated. Cetacean blubber is dense, elastic, and reinforced with thick fibrous connective tissue.

Instead of vaporizing the tissue, the explosion acted like a massive directed charge. When detonated on November 12, the blast launched huge, heavy chunks of putrid blubber thousands of feet into the air. Rather than dispersing harmlessly into the ocean, the airborne debris rained down on onlookers, sand dunes, and nearby parking lots.

One giant chunk crushed the roof of a brand-new sedan parked over a quarter-mile away. Scavenger birds, intended to clean up the remains, were scared away by the blast. Ultimately, workers used bulldozers to bury the remaining unexploded whale portions in place.

The incident became an iconic lesson in civic engineering mishaps and fluid dynamics.
