In November 1970, a 45-foot, 8-ton dead sperm whale washed ashore near Florence, Oregon. Responsible for coastal beach maintenance, the Oregon State Highway Division faced an unprecedented municipal crisis: how to dispose of forty-five feet of decaying megafauna. Engineer George Thornton was tasked with the removal and reasoned that dynamite was the ultimate equalizer.
Thornton calculated that half a ton—twenty cases—of dynamite placed strategically on the ocean side of the carcass would vaporize most of the mammal and push the remaining scraps into the Pacific Ocean. Unfortunately, Thornton's informal ballistic calculations ignored basic biomechanics and explosive physics. Sperm whale blubber is not rigid; it is elastic, dense, and packed with shock-absorbing lipids.
Instead of cleanly disintegrating the whale, the half-ton of dynamite acted like an enormous blubber catapult. When detonated on November 12, the blast produced a massive, red mushroom cloud and propelled large, heavy chunks of decaying blubber high into the atmosphere. Rather than falling harmlessly into the ocean, the airborne blubber reached a terrifying trajectory, raining down on spectators parked a quarter-mile away.
The most spectacular casualty was a brand-new Oldsmobile purchased during a 'Drive Like a Whale of a Bargain' promotion, completely flattened by a boulder-sized block of flying blubber. Spectators fled in terror as aerosolized whale fat coated everything within a thousand-foot radius. The lingering odor haunted the town for weeks, and the remaining un-exploded carcass ultimately had to be buried by hand—the exact labor-intensive task the dynamite was supposed to avoid.
