S. Coast Guard and concluded that burning or burying the giant marine mammal was impractical. Instead, they decided that explosives were the most efficient solution, postulating that half a ton of dynamite would vaporize most of the whale and disintegrate the remainder into small, manageable pieces that scavengers like gulls and crabs could quickly devour.
However, the execution ignored basic principles of blast mechanics, fluid dynamics, and tissue density. On November 12, twenty cases (500 kilograms) of dynamite were strategically placed beneath the whale. When detonated, the blast sent a massive column of sand and debris hundreds of feet into the air.
Rather than disintegrating into microscopic particles, large chunks of dense, fibrous blubber acted like heavy kinetic projectiles. The aerodynamic force propelled massive, blubber-laden missiles far beyond the designated safety perimeter.
