The immediate aftermath was severe: thousands of domestic animals died, foliage withered, and hundreds of local residents developed severe chloracne—a disfiguring skin condition caused by hyperkeratinization and sebaceous gland loss triggered by dioxin poisoning. TCDD acts as a high-affinity ligand for the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), a cellular transcription factor that regulates gene expression. By hijacking AhR pathways, TCDD did not merely poison human cells; it altered the epigenetic landscape.
