On the morning of November 20, 1980, a routine oil exploration project turned into one of the most astonishing man-made engineering disasters in history. Texaco had contracted a drilling rig to search for oil beneath Lake Peigneur, a shallow, 10-foot-deep freshwater body in Iberia Parish, Louisiana. Unknown to the drilling crew, directly beneath the lakebed lay a vast labyrinth of active subterranean shafts belonging to the Diamond Crystal salt mine.
Due to a miscalculation involving map coordinates and projection systems, the 14-inch drill bit strayed hundreds of feet off target, puncturing the roof of one of the mine's upper galleries. As freshwater poured through the small opening into the cavernous salt deposit, it rapidly dissolved the surrounding sodium chloride structure, causing the hole to expand exponentially within minutes. The drill rig began listing heavily as a massive whirlpool opened in the lake.
Realizing the danger, 55 miners underground and the oil rig crew executed a miraculous evacuation; not a single human life was lost. As the vortex expanded, it swallowed the multi-million-dollar drilling rig, eleven barges, a tugboat, 65 acres of surrounding land, and several homes. The whirlpool became so intense that it reversed the flow of the Delcambre Canal, which normally emptied into the Gulf of Mexico.
Ocean water rushed inward to fill the void, creating Louisiana's highest temporary waterfall at 150 feet high as subterranean chambers flooded. Over the following days, water pressure equalized, pushing trapped air up through the mine shafts in spectacular geysers. Lake Peigneur was permanently altered, transformed overnight from a freshwater lake into a deep, brackish marine ecosystem.
