On November 1, 1986, a fire broke out at the Sandoz agrochemical storehouse in the Schweizerhalle industrial area near Basel, Switzerland. As firefighters raced to extinguish the inferno, tens of thousands of cubic meters of runoff water mixed with approximately thirty metric tons of toxic agricultural chemicals, including organophosphate insecticides, mercury-based compounds, and the red dye rhodamine. This lethal chemical concoction flowed directly into the nearby Rhine River, turning the water blood-red and creating a plume of poison that drifted downriver across France, Germany, and the Netherlands.
The immediate ecological toll was catastrophic. Organophosphates, designed to disrupt insect nervous systems by inhibiting acetylcholinesterase, proved lethal to aquatic life. European eels (Anguilla anguilla), which inhabit the river bottom where dense chemical sediments settled, were hit hardest.
Estimates suggest that over 500,000 eels were killed almost instantly along a 400-kilometer stretch of the Rhine, effectively eradicating entire age cohorts of the local population. The collapse of the eel population disrupted the entire aquatic food web, as macroinvertebrates and top predators suffered cascading die-offs. In response to the ecological disaster, the International Commission for the Protection of the Rhine launched the ambitious Rhine Action Programme.
Surprisingly, the crisis catalyzed unprecedented international environmental cooperation, leading to drastic pollution cuts, habitat restoration, and the eventual return of native fish species to a cleaner river system within a decade.
