In September 1987, two scavengers entered an abandoned radiotherapy clinic in Goiânia, Brazil, seeking scrap metal. They dismantled a teletherapy unit and removed a rotating assembly containing a tiny capsule of cesium-137 chloride. Unaware of the danger, they sold the component to a local junkyard owner.
The owner noticed that the material inside glowed a deep, ethereal blue in the dark, mistaking the Cherenkov radiation and luminescence for a magical or bioluminescent substance. Intrigued, he brought the glowing dust into his home, inviting friends, family, and neighbors to admire the mesmerizing powder. Some individuals even rubbed the glowing substance on their skin, believing it to be a harmless novelty or carnival glitter.
Over the next several days, severe radiation sickness spread silently through the community. The contamination pathway rapidly expanded as individuals handled the powder, passed around contaminated paper money, and shared meals with unwashed hands. It was only when the junkyard owner's wife realized a direct connection between the mysterious illness and the glowing substance that she carried the remaining capsule on a public bus to a public health center.
By then, over 112,000 people had to be monitored for contamination, 249 were found to be exposed, and four died from acute radiation syndrome. The incident remains one of the worst radiological disasters in history, demonstrating how curiosity combined with ignorance of unseen hazards can unleash catastrophic consequences.
