On April 13, 1992, Chicago woke up to an unprecedented crisis: the Chicago River was visibly draining, and lower levels of downtown skyscrapers were rapidly filling with murky water. The culprit was not a torrential storm or a burst water main, but a long-forgotten subterranean engineering marvel known as the Chicago Freight Tunnel System. Constructed in the early 1900s to transport coal, freight, and ash beneath the city without clogging surface streets, the 60-mile network of narrow-gauge railway tunnels had fallen largely out of mind by the late 20th century.
Problems began months earlier when a construction crew driving wooden pilings into the riverbed near the Kinzie Street Bridge accidentally punctured the wall of an abandoned tunnel lying directly below. Initially, the breach allowed only a minor trickle of water and mud to pass through. However, over time, the relentless force of the river eroded the surrounding soil, culminating in a catastrophic wall failure.
Millions of gallons of river water surged into the underground labyrinth. Because the historic tunnels were connected to the basements of major Loop buildings, water gushed into basement vaults, destroying sub-level electrical infrastructure, computer networks, and retail stock. The flood forced an immediate evacuation of the city center, shutting down the Chicago Board of Trade and costing local businesses millions per day.
Scrambling to stop the deluge, city engineers eventually plugged the underwater breach using hundreds of tons of concrete, gravel, and giant inflatable bladders.
