In the early 1800s, Polish physician Dr. Feliks Boczkowski made a fascinating observation at the Wieliczka Salt Mine near Krakow. While coal miners frequently suffered from devastating lung diseases like black lung and tuberculosis, salt miners were remarkably healthy and possessed robust respiratory systems.
This discovery sparked a surge of interest in halotherapy—the therapeutic use of salt air. In regions with solar saltpans and industrial brine works, workers who spent hours stirring steaming vats of concentrated saltwater or breaking dry crusts of salt inhaled micro-particles of sodium chloride daily. Physicians began designing specialized inhalation rooms known as Gradierwerke (graduating towers) across Germany, Poland, and Austria.
These giant wooden frameworks held brushwood through which mineral-rich brine trickled down, evaporating in the wind to create a localized microclimate packed with salty aerosol mist. Patients with bronchitis, asthma, and tuberculosis flocked to these industrial-looking health resorts, inhaling the pungent airborne brine in hopes of breaking up mucus and clearing their airways. The salt's natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties did indeed provide temporary relief, establishing an entire industry of brine-based sanitariums that bridged the gap between harsh industrial labor and Victorian medical therapies.
