Steaming Up the Alps: Why Switzerland's Wildest Railway Still Relies on Vintage Firepower

High in the Bernese Oberland, a railway scales gradients steep enough to make a mountain goat nervous, powered by roaring steam engines that defy modern electrical logic.

High above Lake Brienz, the Brienz Rothorn Bahn has been scaling the steep slopes of the Rothorn peak since 1892. While nearly every other Swiss mountain line electrified during the early 20th century, the Brienz Rothorn Railway chose a different path. What began as an economic limitation evolved into a masterclass in specialized alpine safety.

Today, it remains one of the few places in the world where modern, custom-designed steam locomotives operate daily on extreme gradients. Scaling a relentless 25% incline without overhead electrical catenaries is a deliberate engineering strategy. Overhead wires in the High Alps are highly vulnerable to winter avalanches, heavy snow loads, falling rock, and severe icing, creating immense maintenance costs and risk.

Self-contained steam locomotives remove the need for fragile mountain infrastructure entirely. Safety on such steep tracks depends on the specialized Abt rack-and-pinion system. The locomotives feature dual gearwheels that mesh continuously with a central double-toothed rack rail, ensuring at least one gear tooth is fully engaged at all times to prevent wheel slipping.

In the 1990s, rather than abandoning steam, the railway commissioned brand-new, ultra-efficient oil-fired steam locomotives from Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works. These modern steam engines require only one operator, emit minimal smoke compared to traditional coal-burners, and feature automatic water-level controls and independent mechanical emergency brakes attached directly to the cogwheel axle. If power or hydraulics fail completely, mechanical fail-safe brakes lock the train securely to the rack rail, proving that 19th-century mechanical principles, updated with late-20th-century tech, remain unmatched for alpine safety.
