Deep beneath the arid landscape of central Turkey lies Derinkuyu, an ancient multi-level underground city capable of sheltering up to 20,000 people along with their livestock. The system exploited atmospheric pressure differences and natural convection currents: warm air generated by human bodies, oil lamps, and cooking fires naturally rose through dedicated exhaust flues, drawing cool, crisp air down through the primary intake shafts.

Additionally, the surrounding volcanic rock provided natural geothermal insulation, maintaining a stable temperature of 55 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit year-round regardless of blistering summer heat or freezing winter blizzards on the surface. This architectural ingenuity allowed entire populations to hide underground in comfort for months during foreign invasions.
