How Chand Baori's Geometrical Architecture Harnesses Water and Wind

Located in Abhaneri, Rajasthan, Chand Baori is one of India's deepest and largest stepwells, descending 13 stories into the earth. Built in the 9th century, this architectural marvel was designed to solve a severe seasonal problem: extreme arid heat coupled with short, intense monsoon rains. The inverted pyramid geometry, featuring 3,500 narrow steps arranged in perfect symmetry along three sides, serves both functional water-access and thermodynamic purposes.

As monsoon rains fall, the vast funnel-like structure captures runoff, channeling water down to the deep central reservoir while minimizing surface evaporation due to the high walls shadowing the pool. Hydrologically, the unmortared stone masonry allows groundwater to seep in through the surrounding soil while acting as a natural filtration medium. Thermodynamically, Chand Baori acts as a passive cooling system.

Hot ambient air passes over the lip of the well, cools down as it sinks due to the presence of water at the bottom, and remains trapped in the deep shade. The air at the bottom of the stepwell can be up to 5 to 6 degrees Celsius cooler than at ground level, providing a localized microclimate refuge for locals and travelers during scorching desert summers.
