Driving Under the Sea: How the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel Plays Hide and Seek with Ships

Imagine driving across a 17.6-mile expanse of open ocean, only for the road to suddenly dive straight into the sea before popping back up on a man-made island.

Opened in 1964, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel (CBBT) is an engineering wonder designed to solve a unique geographic and military dilemma. Connecting southeastern Virginia to the Delmarva Peninsula, the structure spans 17. 6 miles of open water.

Rather than building a continuous, ultra-high bridge that could hamper heavy naval traffic from nearby Norfolk—or pose a catastrophic blockade risk if destroyed during wartime—engineers devised a radical hybrid solution: combining trestle bridges with underwater tunnels. To transition traffic between the elevated roadways and the underwater tunnels, four five-acre artificial islands were constructed in the bay. Each island was engineered using millions of tons of sand and heavy rock armor to withstand fierce ocean surges and hurricane-force winds.

Drivers descend down steep ramps on these man-made outposts, dropping into mile-long steel-and-concrete tubes buried deep beneath the seafloor. Meanwhile, massive cargo ocean liners and US Navy aircraft carriers glide peacefully directly above the submerged motorists. This seamless dance allows double-decker maritime channels to remain completely clear without disrupting thousands of daily commuters.

It stands as one of the world's most impressive engineering feats, blending islands, bridges, and tunnels into a single ocean-crossing highway.
