The Old Main Post Office in Chicago, spanning nearly three million square feet, was once the busiest postal facility on Earth. Handling millions of letters daily required an internal logistics miracle. Instead of relying solely on pushcarts and elevators, engineers designed an expansive internal pneumatic tube system.
By creating pressure differentials using powerful blowers, canister carriers loaded with mail zipped through miles of tubing at speeds up to 30 miles per hour. Although pneumatic tube technology originated in the late 19th century, mid-20th-century retrofits—including major operational upgrades through 1968—refined the facility's complex mechanical diverters, routing switches, and vacuum pumps. Specialized station operators used coded carrier heads or pin settings that mechanically tripped switches along the network, guiding individual canisters to their designated floor, sorting bay, or outgoing dock.
The pneumatic system minimized internal transit time from hours to seconds, allowing mail sorters to keep pace with the massive volume flowing through the hub. Despite its mechanical brilliance, the labor-intensive maintenance, high energy consumption, and eventual shift toward electronic tracking and continuous conveyer belts eventually rendered the pneumatic grid obsolete. Today, miles of vintage tubing remain silent inside the renovated landmark, standing as a monument to retro-futuristic mechanical automation.
