During the 13th century expansion overseen by architect James of Saint George and Count Peter II of Savoy, specific subterranean chambers and administrative council rooms were outfitted with double-curved groined vault ceilings. Standard flat stone ceilings or basic barrel vaults create uniform specular sound reflections, allowing sound waves to travel clearly across long distances or focus into distinct focal points where distant whispers become audible. Conversely, double-curved stone vaults act as architectural sound diffusers.
By curving stone along two intersecting parabolic axes, incoming sound waves strike complex multi-angular surfaces.
