Located in the Karakum Desert of Turkmenistan, the Darvaza gas crater, widely dubbed the Door to Hell, is a stunning 230-foot-wide abyss engulfed in flames. In 1971, Soviet geologists drilling for oil accidentally punctured a massive subterranean natural gas cavern. The ground beneath the rig collapsed, creating a gaping crater and venting huge volumes of poisonous methane gas into the surrounding environment.
Fearing toxic gas exposure for nearby villages, scientists decided to ignite the methane, predicting the pocket would burn out within a few days or weeks. Decades later, the inferno persists due to unique thermodynamic and geological conditions. The crater sits directly atop a massive hydrocarbon-rich sedimentary basin where deep subterranean pressure continually forces natural gas upward through fractured rock strata.
Methane requires very little oxygen to burn, and the open-pit geometry creates a continuous self-sustaining thermal convection cell: intense convective currents pull cool oxygenated air down into the pit while superheated combustion gases rise. Additionally, the porous sandstone lining the crater walls acts as a massive thermal heat sink, maintaining ambient temperatures high enough to instantly reignite gas leaks even during extreme weather. Unless the deep hydrocarbon reserves are depleted or physically sealed, the thermodynamic loop driving Darvaza will continue indefinitely.
