Located in the Karakum Desert of Turkmenistan, the Darvaza gas crater—famously dubbed the Door to Hell—is a 230-foot-wide crater that collapsed during a Soviet oil drilling operation in 1971. Expecting dangerous methane gas emissions to dissipate quickly, engineers ignited the pit, assuming the fire would burn out within a few weeks. More than half a century later, the inferno continues to burn.

Beneath the intense heat, toxic methane fumes, and harsh soil, scientists discovered an unexpected ecosystem flourishing within this artificial abyss. In 2013, explorer George Kourounis descended into the crater to collect soil samples from the bottom. DNA analysis revealed the presence of specialized extremophilic bacteria capable of surviving high temperatures, nutrient deficiency, and hydrocarbon-dense environments.

These methane-oxidizing extremophiles process methane and methane derivatives for energy, operating in complete isolation from typical solar-driven ecosystems. Studying these microbes provides astrobiologists with critical insights into how microbial life might survive on harsh planetary bodies like Titan or Mars, where hydrocarbon lakes and extreme thermal conditions exist.
