When King Louis XIV transformed Versailles from a hunting lodge into Europe's grandest palace, he envisioned extravagant gardens filled with hundreds of fountain jets operating simultaneously. However, Versailles was built on an elevated plateau miles away from any major natural water source, making water supply an unprecedented hydraulic nightmare. To solve this, Dutch engineer Arnold de Ville and Walloon carpenter Rennequin Sualem designed the Machine de Marly in 1684—a gigantic mechanical complex located on the Seine River.
The system consisted of 14 massive wooden waterwheels, each 38 feet in diameter, driven by the current of the Seine. These wheels powered a network of 221 piston pumps that pushed water through cast-iron pipes up a steep 500-foot incline to the aqueduct of Louveciennes, nearly a mile away. The sheer mechanical complexity was staggering; energy was transferred across hilltops using elaborate linkages of rocking wood-and-iron rods.
Known as one of the wonders of the world at the time, the machine consumed immense financial resources and generated deafening noise, yet it struggled to satisfy Louis XIV's voracious demand for water. Despite frequent maintenance and high operational costs, the original Machine de Marly operated for over a century, standing as a testament to pre-Industrial Revolution mechanical engineering before being replaced in the 19th century.
