In the early 1800s, the bustling port of Gothenburg, Sweden, faced a constant ecological threat: silt accumulation from the Göta River. To keep the harbor navigable for international merchant ships, port authorities required continuous dredging. Steam engines were still expensive, bulky, and unreliable for marine applications in the region, so Swedish engineers devised an ingenious mechanical solution powered by living muscle: horse-powered treadmill bucket dredgers.
These floating wooden dredging barges featured a central conveyor ladder equipped with a series of iron-rimmed wooden buckets. The entire apparatus was connected via wooden gears and shafts to a massive treadmill or capstan on the deck. Draft horses walked in continuous circles or on inclined treadmills aboard the barge, driving the gear drive that rotated the continuous chain of buckets.
As the buckets dipped into the riverbed, they scooped up heavy mud, clay, and gravel, carried it to the top of the ladder, and dumped it down a wooden chute into adjacent hopper barges. A crew of deckhands managed the horses, adjusted the depth of the ladder with winches, and moved the dredger along anchor lines. Though grueling work for both horses and handlers, these animal-powered dredging machines successfully maintained Gothenburg's vital shipping lanes for decades, bridging the gap between manual hand-scooping and the industrial steam-dredging revolution.
