The 1,400-Year-Old Skyscraper That Laughs at Earthquakes

While modern skyscrapers rely on computer-controlled steel dampers to survive megathrust earthquakes, a 7th-century Japanese pagoda has used a dangling tree trunk to stay standing for 1,400 years.

Japan is one of the most seismically active places on Earth, yet the five-story wooden pagoda at Hōryū-ji temple has survived well over a thousand years of powerful earthquakes, typhoons, and fires. Built around 607 AD, it stands as the world's oldest surviving wooden structure. Its secret weapon is the shinbashira, a massive central pillar crafted from a single giant Japanese cypress trunk.

Surprisingly, the shinbashira does not support any weight of the surrounding roof or floors. In fact, in many pagodas, the central pillar does not even touch the ground—it hangs suspended from the top levels like a massive pendulum. During an earthquake, each story of the pagoda acts as an independent stacked wooden box connected only by loose mortise-and-tenon joints.

As ground forces shake the temple, these individual stories sway in alternating directions in a fluid motion known as yawara, akin to a snake dance. The suspended shinbashira moves out of phase with the outer frame, knocking against dynamic friction pads and acting as a natural tuned mass damper. By absorbing and dissipating kinetic energy through controlled micro-collisions and friction, the central pillar prevents the structure from swaying past its center of gravity.

This ancient passive seismic isolation engineering was so effective that modern structural architects explicitly adapted the shinbashira design to stabilize the world's tallest broadcasting tower, the 2,080-foot Tokyo Skytree.
