Situated on the brink of Victoria Falls along the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, Devil's Pool is one of the world's most extreme natural geological formations. Swimmers can lounge safely within inches of a 108-meter vertical drop into the Batoka Gorge, protected by a sunken rock wall. This incredible phenomenon is made possible by a specific combination of basalt rock weathering and fluid dynamic principles operating during the dry season.
The foundation of the pool rests on the Karoo flood basalt, a dense volcanic formation created over 180 million years ago. Millions of years of river flow eroded softer fissure lines in the rock while leaving harder basalt ridges intact. At the western edge of Livingstone Island, one such hard basalt ridge forms a submerged lip known as a natural weir.
During the wet season, the Zambezi River swells dramatically, pushing over 500,000 cubic meters of water per minute over the falls; during this period, the velocity and sheer volume of the water would instantly sweep any object over the edge. However, between late August and January, water levels drop significantly. As the river flow velocity decreases, a hydraulic boundary layer forms behind the basalt lip.
The rock ridge disrupts the forward kinetic energy of the stream, forcing water upward and creating a localized recirculating eddy current. This counter-current action generates a low-velocity pocket immediately upstream of the lip, counteracting the primary downstream push of the river and keeping swimmers safely contained within the eddy zone.
