Patented in 1820 by American architect and civil engineer Ithiel Town, the Town lattice truss represented a monumental leap in bridge engineering during the early industrial era. Prior to Town’s design, long-span wooden bridges relied heavily on heavy timber framing, complex joinery, and specialized labor. Town introduced an elegant, highly redundant web of crisscrossing light planks—typically 2x10 or 3x12 inch timber—held together at their intersections by wooden pegs known as treenails or 'trunnels.'
The structural brilliance of the lattice truss lies in its distribution of load. Instead of concentrating severe stress on a few heavy structural members, the web of overlapping diagonal planks distributes tensile and compressive forces uniformly across hundreds of connection points. When a vehicle crosses the bridge, the load transfers into the top and bottom chords and disperses diagonally across the lattice grid.
Because the force per joint is minimal, the system can tolerate local timber defects or individual element failures without sudden catastrophic collapse. Furthermore, the design eliminated the need for complex mortise and tenon joints, permitting rapid construction using off-the-shelf lumber assembled by ordinary laborers. Town charged a royalty of one dollar per foot of bridge length, making himself wealthy while quietly laying the structural framework for future iron and steel truss designs.
