In the early 1900s, the booming electrical industry faced a critical shortage of shellac, a natural resin harvested from the secretions of lac beetles in Southeast Asia. Seeking to cash in on the high demand for electrical insulation, Belgian-American chemist Leo Baekeland set out to create a synthetic alternative. Experimenting in his Yonkers laboratory, Baekeland combined phenol, a byproduct of coal tar, with formaldehyde under controlled heat and pressure.
Instead of replicating liquid shellac, Baekeland synthesized a completely new substance: a thermosetting polymer that melted initially but hardened permanently under extreme heat and pressure. Patented in 1907, Baekeland named his creation Bakelite. Unlike earlier semi-synthetics like celluloid, Bakelite was the first entirely synthetic plastic, containing no molecules found in nature.
It was heat-resistant, electrically non-conductive, chemically inert, and could be molded into virtually any shape. Bakelite transformed consumer manufacturing overnight, enabling mass production of durable radio casings, telephones, kitchenware, jewelry, and electrical components. Its slogan, 'The Material of a Thousand Uses,' proved to be an understatement as it ushered in the modern Plastic Age.
Though eventually superseded by cheaper, more flexible thermoplastics in the mid-20th century, Bakelite laid the foundation for modern materials science and paved the way for the synthetic world we inhabit today.
