In 1927, the British General Post Office launched an engineering marvel beneath the streets of London: Mail Rail, a 6. 5-mile narrow-gauge electric railway operating 70 feet underground. Designed to bypass London's notoriously congested surface traffic, it operated completely driverless trains decades before computer microprocessors existed.
The system relied on ingenious electro-mechanical automation. The track was divided into electrified sections controlled by centralized dispatch frames and relay switchboards. Trains were propelled via a 440-volt DC third rail system using remote switch control: unpowered track sections acted as automatic brakes, while energizing a track block sent the small metal trains cruising at speeds up to 35 mph.
At stations, tracks sloped upward to naturally decelerate incoming trains without active onboard braking systems, then sloped downward on exit to provide gravity-assisted acceleration. Mechanical switches automatically diverted trains into station sidings where mailbags were loaded and unloaded using vertical spiral chutes and conveyor belts connected directly to sorting offices above. During World War II, the line was temporarily paused to store priceless national treasures from the Tate Gallery and National Portrait Gallery, protecting them from Blitz bombings.
Mail Rail ran continuously for 76 years until its operational closure in 2003, standing as a triumph of early 20th-century mechanical automation.
