The River Above the River: Germany's Magdeburg Water Bridge

Spanning 918 meters, the Magdeburg Water Bridge allows massive cargo ships to cross over the Elbe River on a giant bridge made of water.

The Magdeburg Water Bridge in central Germany is an engineering marvel that literally lets ships sail over water. Completed in 2003 after six years of construction, this navigable aqueduct connects the Elbe-Havel Canal to the Mittelland Canal, resolving a century-old logistics nightmare. Previously, canal vessels had to descend into the Elbe River via boat lifts and navigate low water levels before ascending back into the opposite canal.

The solution was a massive steel and concrete trough filled with water that spans the Elbe River. The bridge stretches 918 meters in total length, with 228 meters suspended directly over open water. To hold the immense weight of water—roughly 24,000 metric tons in the main trough—engineers constructed deep concrete piers resting on riverbed pilings.

Fascinatingly, when a ship enters the bridge, the total weight on the bridge structure does not increase. According to Archimedes' principle of flotation, a ship displaces a volume of water equal to its own weight, causing excess water to spill over the ends of the trough into connecting locks. The structure required 24,000 tons of steel and 68,000 cubic meters of concrete to build.

Today, the water bridge shaves off hours of commercial transport time, serving as a functional water intersection for European shipping.
