For centuries, the spiral tusk of the narwhal inspired legends of the mythical unicorn. Modern evolutionary biology, however, reveals a reality far stranger than fiction. The tusk is actually an elongated, left canine tooth that erupts through the male narwhal's upper lip, spiraling counterclockwise up to nine feet in length.
Unlike typical mammalian teeth, which possess a hard, protective enamel coating over softer dentin, the narwhal tusk evolved in reverse. It lacks enamel entirely, exposing a porous outer layer containing millions of microscopic channels called dentinal tubules. These tubules lead directly to the tooth's living pulp core, which is packed with nerve endings connected to the brain.
This structure renders the tusk an inside-out sensory organ capable of detecting minute changes in ocean salinity, water temperature, and barometric pressure. By raising their tusks into the air or sweeping them through seawater, narwhals can gauge ice formation, locate open water, and track prey. This sensory advantage, combined with sexual selection, explains why such a seemingly unwieldy organ persisted through millions of years of Arctic evolution.
