By the 1830s, New York City was on the brink of collapse due to contaminated wells, cholera epidemics, and catastrophic fires. The solution was the Old Croton Aqueduct, a monumental civil engineering feat completed in 1842 under chief engineer John B. Jervis.
Stretching 41 miles from Westchester County to Manhattan, the aqueduct relied entirely on natural gravity to transport fresh water, functioning without a single mechanical pump. Engineers constructed a continuous horseshoe-shaped brick and masonry conduit measuring 8. 5 feet high and 7.
5 feet wide. To maintain a constant flow, the conduit was built with a precise, uninterrupted downward slope of approximately 13 inches per mile. Where the pipeline encountered valleys, streams, or low ground, engineers utilized closed cast-iron pipes functioning as inverted siphons, utilizing fluid pressure equilibrium to carry water down into depressions and back up the opposing hillside without losing hydraulic head.
The most dramatic structure, High Bridge, spanned the Harlem River to bring water directly into Manhattan. Once in the city, water entered the receiving reservoir at modern-day Central Park before flowing into the iconic Egyptian Revival distributing reservoir at 42nd Street, where the New York Public Library stands today. Capable of delivering up to 85 million gallons of clean water daily, the Old Croton Aqueduct transformed public health, enabled urban expansion, and established foundational principles for modern hydraulic infrastructure.
