Puppet Master Fungus: How Cordyceps Controls Ant Elevation

Ophiocordyceps unilateralis manipulates carpenter ants using a sophisticated extracellular fungal network that forcefully contracts host jaw muscles at specific heights.

The parasitic fungus Ophiocordyceps unilateralis s. l. exhibits one of nature's most chilling examples of behavioral manipulation.

Upon infecting a host carpenter ant (Camponotus leonardi), the fungal spores germinate and penetrate the insect's cuticle. Rather than invading the central nervous system directly, the fungus proliferates throughout the host's body cavity, forming an extensive extracellular physical network. This mycelial meshwork surrounds and invades muscle fibers, particularly the large adductor muscles controlling the mandibles.

Through direct mechanical disruption and localized secretion of bioactive metabolites, the fungal network hijacks the ant's motor control. In its final hours, the infected ant is driven to climb vegetation to a hyper-specific microclimate: precisely 25 centimeters above the forest floor on the underside of a north-facing leaf, where humidity and temperature are optimal for fungal spore development. Once at this precise elevation, the extracellular fungal network triggers a terminal hyper-contraction of the mandibular muscles, known as the death grip.

The ant's jaws clamp down permanently onto a leaf vein. Shortly after host death, a fruiting body erupts from the back of the ant's head, showering infective spores onto foraging nestmates below.
