Bridge to Nowhere? Why the Öresund Link Dives Underwater

Spanning the strait between Denmark and Sweden, the Öresund Link mysteriously transforms from a towering cable-stayed bridge into a subterranean tunnel in the middle of the sea.

The Öresund Link, connecting Copenhagen, Denmark, and Malmö, Sweden, is a marvel of modern civil engineering. Opened in 2000, the 16-kilometer connection features a striking structural shift: drivers start on a 7. 8-kilometer cable-stayed bridge from the Swedish coast, land on a custom-made artificial island called Peberholm, and then descend into the 4-kilometer Drogden Tunnel to reach the Danish island of Amager.

Engineers chose this hybrid design over a continuous bridge or full tunnel due to strict environmental, aviation, and maritime constraints. First, Copenhagen Airport sits right near the Danish shore. A tall bridge structure on the western end would have posed an unacceptable collision hazard to low-flying aircraft.

Second, a low bridge across the entire strait would have blocked large maritime traffic entering the Baltic Sea. Third, building a bridge elevated enough for ships across the whole strait was cost-prohibitive, while a full tunnel was equally expensive and risked disrupting critical water flow between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. The solution was the creation of Peberholm, an artificial island built from material dredged from the seabed.

Peberholm serves as the seamless transition point between the bridge and the submerged tube tunnel. Constructed with minimal human intervention, the island has also become an unplanned ecological sanctuary for rare seabirds and plants. By balancing air safety, naval access, budget, and delicate marine hydrology, the Öresund Link remains one of the world's most ingenious hybrid infrastructure marvels.
