Beneath the bustling boulevards of Paris lies a vast network of ancient limestone quarries that supplied building blocks for the city's monuments from Roman times through the Middle Ages. By the late 18th century, centuries of unregulated extraction had left subterranean Paris hollowed out like a honeycomb. In 1774, a series of catastrophic cave-ins swallowed houses, streets, and carts on the Rue d'Enfer, triggering widespread panic.
In response, King Louis XVI established the Inspection Générale des Carrières (IGC) in 1777, appointing architect Charles-Axel Guillaumot to map, reinforce, and stabilize the fragile underground network. Guillaumot's team implemented unprecedented quarry consolidation techniques. Rather than simply backfilling the massive voids, engineers constructed subterranean masonry support pillars, barrel vaults, and retaining walls directly beneath critical surface structures.
When limestone pillars showed signs of crumbling, workers injected specialized lime mortar and grout into structural fissures, creating reinforced stone masonry anchors. Simultaneously, Paris was facing severe overcrowding in surface cemeteries like the Saints-Innocents. The crown decided to repurpose the newly stabilized, consolidated quarry galleries as an ossuary.
Between 1785 and 1814, millions of human skeletons were carefully transferred underground, meticulously stacked alongside the new engineering supports. The IGC's pioneering geotechnical engineering prevented the collapse of Paris, turning dangerous voids into iconic historic infrastructure.
