In 1866, decades before the advent of electronic telegraphy and email, Paris revolutionized urban communications with the inauguration of the 'Pneu'—an extensive subterranean postal system powered by air pressure. Spanning over 400 kilometers at its peak, this hidden network transported rolled paper missives, known as 'petits bleus,' contained inside brass and leather capsules hurtling beneath the boulevards at speeds exceeding 40 kilometers per hour. Lacking electric pumps in its early decades, Paris utilized the high pressure of its municipal water grid to power the network. Water flowing from city reservoirs into specialized underground sealed reservoirs pushed and compressed ambient air into the pneumatic tubes. Reversing the hydraulic valves evacuated the air, creating a vacuum that sucked incoming capsules toward their destination.

This ingenious hydro-pneumatic system operated silently and continuously beneath sewer lines and catacombs. Postal workers at central relays sorted incoming capsules using complex mechanical manifolds before dispatching them into secondary lines.
