What history often overlooks is that this crucial radar system was running on borrowed time due to a trivial administrative failure: a missing delivery of replacement oil filters for its mobile diesel generator. Operating far from the primary naval base, the remote hilltop site relied on an unshielded internal combustion engine to supply stable high-voltage electricity to the radar transmitter.
In the weeks leading up to the attack, operators had repeatedly requested fresh generator oil filters, but bureaucratic supply chain delays held up the small shipment in an Oahu warehouse.
