Built in 1904 on Canada's Trent-Severn Waterway, the Peterborough Lift Lock (Lock 21) remains a masterpiece of Edwardian engineering. Designed by superintending engineer Richard Birdsall Rogers, this monumental structure lifts boats 19. 8 meters (65 feet) using nothing more than water, gravity, and Archimedes' principle.
The secret lies in its twin water-filled chambers, known as caissons, which act like a massive hydraulic seesaw. Each caisson sits atop a massive steel hydraulic ram. Because of Archimedes' principle of water displacement, a caisson weighs the exact same amount whether it is empty or carrying a full load of boats.
To operate the lift, operators stop the top chamber slightly short of the upper canal level, allowing an extra foot of water to flow into it. This extra layer of water adds roughly 144 tons of weight to the upper chamber. When the hydraulic valve connecting the two ram cylinders is opened, gravity forces the heavier upper chamber downward.
As it descends, it pushes hydraulic fluid through the pipe into the other cylinder, effortlessly lifting the lower chamber to the top. The entire transfer takes less than ten minutes and consumes zero electrical energy for the lift itself. Over a century after its grand opening, the Peterborough Lift Lock still holds the record as the highest dual hydraulic boat lift in the world, serving as a pristine, enduring testament to clean, low-tech mechanical brilliance.
