Snapping its oversized claw at blinding speed, the tiny pistol shrimp creates a collapsing cavitation bubble that briefly burns as hot as the surface of the sun.

The pistol shrimp (family Alpheidae) possesses one of the most astonishing biomechanical weapons in the animal kingdom. Rather than using its oversized claw to physically pinch prey, the shrimp snaps it shut at speeds exceeding 60 miles per hour. This rapid movement fires a high-velocity jet of water that travels up to 62 miles per hour, creating a low-pressure zone where water vaporizes into a tiny cavitation bubble.

As the surrounding water pressure collapses this bubble, the gas inside is violently compressed, triggering an effect known as sonoluminescence. During the split-second collapse, temperatures inside the bubble surge to over 4,700 degrees Celsius (8,500 degrees Fahrenheit)—a heat intensity comparable to the surface of the sun. The resulting shockwave stuns or kills small fish and crabs up to several feet away, while producing a sound reaching 218 decibels, making pistol shrimp colonies a primary source of ocean noise capable of interfering with naval sonar.
