Why Sea Spiders Keep Their Internal Organs in Their Legs

Pycnogonids, commonly known as sea spiders, are marine arthropods that have taken anatomical miniaturization to an extreme level. Furthermore, female sea spiders store mature eggs within their leg segments, and male sea spiders carry special legs called ovigers specifically designed to groom and carry fertilized egg clusters until hatching. This extraordinary anatomical restructuring illustrates how extreme miniaturization can force an animal to completely reinvent basic organ topology and physiological mechanics to survive in marine environments.
