The Flying Drawbridge: Inside Leeuwarden's Slauerhoffbrug

Instead of opening like a traditional drawbridge, this bizarre Dutch creation swings an entire square deck into the sky using a single eccentric pylon arm.

Located in Leeuwarden, Netherlands, the Slauerhoffbrug is one of the most distinctive fully automatic bascule bridges in the world, often nicknamed the Flying Drawbridge. Designed by Van Driel Meurtant, this fully automated tail bridge spans the Harlinger Vaart canal and handles dense road traffic while frequently lifting to allow ships to pass. What makes the Slauerhoffbrug exceptional is its radical asymmetric single-pylon design.

Rather than lifting from a central hinge or pivoting upward with dual arms, the bridge utilizes a massive yellow-painted single hydraulic pylon arm offset to one side. The bridge deck itself measures 15 by 15 meters and is painted in the yellow and blue colors of Leeuwarden's flag. When a vessel approaches, two powerful hydraulic cylinders rapidly tilt the entire deck backward at an angle, lifting it 90 degrees directly into the air away from the road path.

This asymmetric pivot mechanism allows the deck to completely clear the canal without requiring overhead support structures or obstructive piers in the water channel. Because the mechanism operates outside the navigable waterway, ship passage is maximized and construction required minimal underwater foundation work. Operating roughly 10 times a day, the entire cycle of raising, letting a boat pass, and lowering takes just minutes, combining playful architectural art with highly efficient structural engineering.
