The Golden Pendulum: Engineering the Taipei 101 Tuned Mass Damper

Suspended between the 87th and 92nd floors of Taipei 101 hangs a 660-tonne golden steel sphere designed to keep a megatall skyscraper stable during violent typhoons and earthquakes.

Rising 1,667 feet above a seismic fault line in a region routinely battered by Pacific typhoons, Taipei 101 presents an extreme structural engineering challenge. When strong winds or tectonic shifts act upon a supertall skyscraper, they induce dynamic lateral loads that cause the structure to sway. Unchecked, this sway can cause severe structural fatigue, structural failure, or intense motion sickness for occupants.

To counteract these forces, structural engineering firm Thornton Tomasetti designed a passive harmonic countermeasure: a giant Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) suspended inside the building's upper atrium. The TMD consists of a massive sphere measuring 18 feet in diameter and weighing 660 metric tonnes, constructed from 41 individual circular steel plates welded in layers. Suspended from eight 42-millimeter-thick steel cables, the sphere functions as a massive pendulum tuned precisely to the natural resonant frequency of Taipei 101.

When wind gusts push the skyscraper to the left, inertia keeps the sphere momentarily in place, causing it to swing out of phase relative to the building's movement. This movement transfers kinetic energy into eight double-acting hydraulic shock absorbers positioned beneath the steel ball. These actuators convert the energy of the swaying building into heat, dissipating dynamic sway by up to 40 percent.

Beyond structural protection, the TMD reduces low-frequency acoustic vibrations and micro-resonance through the building frame, neutralizing structural groan during high-wind storms and maintaining acoustic comfort inside high-floor offices.
