Suspended between the 87th and 92nd floors of Taipei 101 hangs a shiny 660-tonne steel sphere designed to keep a skyscraper standing during super typhoons and massive earthquakes. It turns extreme kinetic energy into manageable heat through elegant mechanical physics.

Standing in a region prone to severe typhoons and frequent seismic activity, Taipei 101 relies on one of the world's most visible and impressive engineering marvels: a 660-metric-ton tuned mass damper (TMD). Suspended in the building's upper atrium from eight 42-millimeter-thick steel cables, this massive sphere functions as a harmonic absorber that counteracts the building's dynamic swaying caused by strong winds or ground motion. When high winds or earthquake waves hit Taipei 101, the tower naturally sways in one direction.

Due to inertia, the heavy pendulum sphere resists this sudden motion and sways in the opposite direction relative to the building's movement.
