How Freezer-Pipes Keep the Trans-Alaska Pipeline Floating on Frozen Ground

Pumping hot crude oil across 800 miles of sub-zero wilderness sounds like a recipe for a massive mudslide. Here is how passive physics keeps Alaska's mega-pipeline from sinking into liquefied tundra.

Pumping warm crude oil at over 100°F (38°C) across 800 miles of Arctic wilderness presents a massive engineering nightmare: heat. If the pipeline sat directly on frozen Alaskan ground, its thermal energy would melt the underlying permafrost. The solid ice-soil mixture would turn into a soupy mud bath, causing the heavy 48-inch steel pipe to sag, bend, and catastrophically rupture.

To solve this, engineers elevated more than 400 miles of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS) on vertical support members (VSMs). But elevation alone was not enough to stop ambient ground heat transfer. Enter the thermosyphon: a brilliant piece of zero-electricity passive refrigeration engineering.

Embedded inside the hollow steel support posts are sealed tubes filled with liquid anhydrous ammonia. During cold winter months, ground heat causes the liquid ammonia at the bottom of the tube to vaporize. The rising ammonia gas travels up to the top of the post, which sticks out above ground and is capped with aluminum radiator fins.

Exposure to the freezing Alaskan air chills the gas, causing it to condense back into a liquid and run down the pipe walls to repeat the cycle. This continuous passive loop extracts heat from the deep soil and radiates it into the atmosphere. Remarkably, this process super-cools the permafrost during winter, chilling it so thoroughly that the ground stays frozen solid throughout the brief Arctic summer, even when the thermosyphons are dormant.

With zero moving parts, zero pumps, and no external power source, these silent thermal guardians have protected the Arctic ecosystem and oil infrastructure since 1977.
